Welcome to this week’s edition of Open Tabs, where I share my recent reads, current obsessions, and media consumptions every Sunday!

I’m tired of content. I almost skipped this week’s Open Tabs because I didn’t want to be a source of more content. But here I am, giving in at 6 pm on Sunday. I actually think of these as a (public) form of journaling for myself, and I like looking back on them to see what I was thinking about and engaging with. So I suppose I will indulge myself and put this together anyways.
Reading [Books]
Daughter by Claudia Dey
This short novel is about the parasitic relationship between a daughter (Mona) and her father (Paul). I just finished reading this today so I’m still getting my thoughts together, and there’s a lot to unpack. But I was most intrigued by the suffocating cadence of the sentences and how that reflected Mona’s mental state.
Currently Reading:
A People’s Guide to Capitalism by Hadas Thier
How to Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair (audio)
Reading [Online]
Sowing Seeds of Change (Verso)
“A Ghost is a Memory” On Bodies, Belief, and the Places Ghost Stories Live (LitHub)
Reading [Substack]
Watching
I have ceased all streaming subscriptions, so the only thing I’m watching these days are all manner of journaling videos on YouTube. let me watch you journal. tell me about your notebook ecosystem. give me some journaling prompts. tell me why you’re changing your entire journaling system after just 2 months. I want it all.
Listening [Music]
I’ve added a few more songs recently.
Listening [Podcast]
This series covers “the untold origin story of the NYPD”, chronicling the history of New York City’s policing and the violence hiding within the system. This was definitely created for an audience who is unfamiliar with this kind of history, so it’s quite engaging and accessible.
Googling
truffle hunting pigs
daisies
productivity planner
tulpa
yoga poses you can do in bed
Baking
I’ve had a jar of maraschino cherries sitting in my pantry for months because I knew I wanted to make cherry cookies. But I haven’t been able to find an ideal recipe, and I always eat my chocolate chips before I get around to baking…today, I finally tried one out, sans chocolate chips. I chose a bad recipe! Structurally-speaking, it made no sense. But a few adjustments turned the dry clumps of flour into cookies, and they taste pretty good so I will still be eating all of them. But next time, I’m going to buy chocolate chips and try this recipe instead.
Last Week…
