Welcome to this week’s edition of Open Tabs, where I share my recent reads, current obsessions, and media consumptions every Sunday!
Happy Sunday! I didn’t mean to skip a week, but now it feels like it’s been ages. I had a rough couple of weeks mentally, which means I’ve spent a lot of time deep cleaning my apartment. So at least my space feels nice…and now I can gather all the things I’ve consumed lately (but barely remember).
Reading [Books]
What I’ve finished since we last spoke…
Motherdom by Alex Bollen
This is a non-fiction work that sets out to break down all of the “good mother myths”; and separate the beliefs we hold about motherhood and childrearing from the bad science that upholds them.
We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer
I listened to this on audio in the midst of my cleaning spree(s). I don’t consume much horror or thriller-adjacent literature, but I quite enjoyed listening to this. If you’re a fan of house-centric, psychological horror, you might like this too. I am tempted to list all the works it reminds me of, but I feel that could spoil things.
Hold Everything Dear by John Berger
This compact collection of essays on political resistance is a gem! You’ll find essays about Palestine, the war on terror post-9/11, political hope and despair, and desire. I will surely be reading this again.
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali
This book brought a sort of “Western neoliberal feminism” vibe to the function that I do not like…I feel I’d have to really get into it to get into it, but this just felt a bit disappointing. Not to mention the writing was simply not to my taste. (To be fair: the reason I get annoyed with commercial historical/political fiction is because I have strong opinions on this stuff and these books are often written for people who don’t.)

Reading [Short Story]
I’ve been reading through some of the climate fiction on Grist. These stories are all written with the intent of imagining a better future, one filled with solutions and a different way of living. Think Solarpunk instead of climate doom.
Watching [TV]
Allen v Farrow (2021)
In this short docu-series, the Farrows open up about Woody Allen’s various abuses against the family. While I certainly knew the basics, I was not aware of the full details here. It’s a tough watch.
Listening [Music]
I’ve been loving Sleigh Bell’s recent album

How Books About Things that Changed the World…Changed the World (Decoder Ring)
What’s Lost in Trump’s DEI Ban? (Code Switch)
Hoax Memoir Spectacular! (You’re Wrong About)
