Welcome to this week’s edition of Open Tabs, where I share my recent reads, current obsessions, and media consumptions every Sunday!
Early spring isn’t hitting like it usually does. We’ve had some beautiful weather for March, and the way the light comes in all throughout the day is wonderful. But it’s been difficult adjusting to the days as they get longer—the rhythms of winter linger. My energy levels aren’t matching up!
Speaking of Spring: I shared some seasonal book recommendations in Thursday’s letter (ICYMI).
Reading [Books]
I am currently reading Orlanda by Jacqueline Harpman (among other things), and will report back next week after I finish. Here’s what I did finish this week:
Open Throat By Henry Hoke
I listened to this novella on audio, and really enjoyed it. I actually found this to be quite humorous, hopeful, and heartwarming. It reminded me of the end of Monstrilio (M.’s perspective).
Woolgathering by Patti Smith
As mentioned in my Spring reading recommendations, I did end up re-reading this. It’s a tiny little book, so it was easy to breeze through when I had a few moments here and there.
Reading [Online]
“The Myth of the Beginning of Time” by Gabriele Veneziano (Scientific American)
I read the first half of this last summer, when I was going through a phase: I desperately wanted to Understand (I go through these phases regularly). I bookmarked it, got distracted by other things that seemed like Answers, but they were all false starts…anyways, I finally read this. Quite an old article, but I’m admittedly very behind on physics either way.
“If the universe is eternal into the future, its contents thinning to a meager gruel, it is also eternal into the past.”
Watching [TV]
White Lotus (season 3)
I watched all of season 3 this week so I’d be caught up for the finale. Parker Posey is so great in everything she does!
Edit: I don’t know why I thought the season finale was tonight, but it is not! But at least I’m caught up.
Listening [Music]
New Japanese Breakfast album! I think my favorite song is Picture Window.
Listening [Podcast]
What James Baldwin Can Teach Us About Israel (Code Switch)
