Welcome to this week’s edition of Open Tabs, where I share my current reads, recent obsessions, and media consumptions every Sunday!
I like having these Open Tabs issues ready for Sunday mornings, but often I don’t really have the time to write them until Sunday. Usually, that leads me to skipping them completely, but that’s a little silly. So I figured I’d sit down now and have it out mid-day—close enough! I’m also working on another Thursday letter, so hopefully that will be out this week or next.
Reading [Books]
I finished Set My Heart on Fire by Izumi Suzuki.
I’m in the middle of listening to Committed by Suzanne Scanlon on audio.
I’m slowly reading through The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee (reading about 20 pages every couple of days).
I have some other books on the go, but those are the main 3 I’ve been picking up this past week.
Watching [Movie]
This was one of those weeks when I suddenly decided to watch movies everyone was talking about years ago…
Midsommar (2019) — I liked this overall. It was good but maybe lacking some coherence. I enjoy slow storylines and movies that are more subdued, but it feels like something was missing here. I know it’s a horror movie, so the main goal is to deliver creepy moments. But a lot of the plot points were disjointed, and could have been smoothed into a more interesting story.
Barbie (2023) — Okay, I totally get why this had mass appeal (because it was created to have mass appeal), but this was extremely boring and lifeless.
Watching [TV]
I rewatched the first season of Girls for a bit of comfort and commiseration. I only watched the show for the first time a couple of years ago, so I don’t have a particular attachment to it. But it sounded like the right kind of show for my current mood.
Listening [Music]
It’s Spotify Wrapped week!
So of course I’m going to share mine. Well, I’ll save you from my stats. Instead, I added a bunch of my tops songs to the Open Tabs playlist.
Listening [Podcast]
Since I’m rewatching Girls, I figured I’d listen to this Girls rewatch podcast to go along with it. I don’t know if I will continue through all the seasons, but it’s something to listen to while I brush my teeth or do the dishes.
Misc.
It seems like it could potentially have all the best features of both Goodreads and Storygraph in one, along with significantly better UX and visual design than the other two. I’m still getting used to it, but I think it could be a more fun reading app to add to the mix. I’m not completely sure how following/friends works or if it’s easy to find people, but follow me if you’d like.

Baking
I’ve been wanting to bake for a while, and I finally made the time for it. This weekend I baked these peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and they turned out sooooo good. Absolutely delicious. I baked a couple of batches and froze the rest of the dough for another time.
