Welcome to the latest edition of Open Tabs! Keep reading to see what I’ve been consuming, perusing, and browsing lately.
July has been weird and awful and exhausting and HOT (except for the days when it wasn’t hot, and instead it was flooding!). I’ve been struggling with my depression, and I’m not sure if it’s because of the books I read, or if I chose those books because I was depressed. It’s hard to say!
Anyways, I think this month’s tabs will make it clear what’s been going through my brain lately. Sorry if this adds to your anxiety.
Reading:
Record-smashing storms like Tuesday’s could become more common in St. Louis (STL Public Radio): We received A LOT of rain this past week, which has led to flash flooding and a lot of damage. These extreme weather events are becoming more common…(not to mention the devastating flooding in Kentucky)
Pregnant Women Can’t Get Divorced in Missouri (Riverfront Times): Considering abortion is now illegal in Missouri, this fact is even more alarming.
Was that wild weather caused by climate change? (CNN): This article is from last year, reporting IPCC findings. But it is still a good primer.
Watching:
Abolition. Feminism. Now. Panel: A panel put on by Haymarket Books, with the authors of Aboliton. Feminism. Now. I read the book this month so I wanted to give this a watch.
Intro to Socialism and Capitalism (DSA): This panel discussion (put together by the Democratic Socialists of America) is a great primer. The main speakers make some clarifications about Capitalism, Marxism, and what Socialism could mean for us.
Irma Vep (HBOmax): This series was unexpectedly comforting to watch, if not a bit pretentious (with a dose of not-so-great acting).
Severance (Apple TV): Everyone told me this was boring until the end, but it’s one of the few shows in recent months that hasn’t bored me one bit. That’s a recommendation!
Servant (Apple TV): I just binged the first season over the weekend (the final weekend of July). It’s weird and creepy. I’m hooked!
Listening:
Jia Tolentino and Stephania Taladrid on the End of Roe v. Wade (The New Yorker Radio Hour)
Go Ask Alice with Carmen Maria Machado (You’re Wrong About): If you picked up “Go Ask Alice” the first time you were old enough to browse the YA section at the library alone, and felt really dark and mature for reading this, then go listen to this mini-series (3 parts).
We Will NOT Adopt Your Baby (Pick Me Up, I’m Scared)
Roe v Wade (Slow Burn, season 7): This short series digs into some of the history that led up to a groundbreaking decision in Roe v Wade—you know, the one that made sure Americans could legally access abortions. How far we’ve fallen!
