Welcome to this month’s issue of Open Tabs. Find out what I’ve been reading, listening to, watching, googling, etc lately.
I wish I had something interesting to say here but I really don’t. Here are some links!
(I always leave this until the last minute, so I have to rush to compile a month’s worth of consumption by scrubbing through my internet history…it’s an annoying process, I should maaaybe be more organized about it.)
Reading
The Theft of the Commons by Eula Biss (The New Yorker): “I was trying to locate the origins of private property, a preposterous pursuit.” Absolutely a must-read. And then go read The Origin of Capitalism by Ellen Meiksins Wood.
Joan Didion and Eve Babitz Shared an Unlikely, Uneasy Friendship (VanityFair): Lili Anolik is at it again, giving us the stories we want. Would it be silly for me to hope Anolik will somehow turn this into another season of her podcast? Anyways, time to get back to my Didion and Babitz collections.
The Coming Bad Days by Sarah Bernstein (Granta): This is an excerpt from Bernstein’s novel of the same name.
Watching
the fashion in the Nanny is still so good (YouTube): the title says it all
Thoroughbreds (HBOmax): a sociopath and a rich girl become friends…
Industry (HBOmax): I’m kind of obsessed? Luckily the second season just started so I’ll have to keep watching (eventually).
Listening
Mean Reds (Podcast): Ever since I read Happy Hour last month, I’ve been mildly obsessed with Marlowe Grandados (the author). Her podcast about movies is so fun to listen to.
Cowgirl Summer (playlist)
Googling
Sophie Calle
hyponatremia
parthenogenesis
solidarity economy
bright young things
sign of the cross
Books on My Radar
The Coming Bad Days by Sarah Bernstein (as mentioned above)
